Save and Upload Research from Smokeball

Pull documents directly from any Smokeball matter into CiteLaw for Citation Verification, and export the results back to Smokeball as a Word document attached to the matter.

How to use: Click the Documents tab in CiteLaw, then click Connect to sign in to Smokeball. Your matter files will appear inside CiteLaw. Select a document, choose CiteLaw Action, and pick the Verification function. When the analysis is complete, click Export and select Save to Smokeball to send the result back as a .docx file.

Legal Research

CiteLaw's "Ask Navigator" answers research questions in plain language and returns a structured answer with every claim tied to primary authority. Cases, statutes, and rules are pulled directly from CiteLaw's indexed database of 9.5 million opinions and statutes, not from the open internet.

How to use: Open the CiteLaw panel inside Smokeball, type your question into Ask Navigator, and select a jurisdiction. Click any citation in the response to read the underlying case or statute in CiteLaw.

Citation Verification

CiteLaw Verify checks every citation in a brief, motion, or memo against the CiteLaw database. Each citation comes back marked Verified, Possible Match, or No Match, with side-by-side comparison of the input against what the database actually contains. Filter results to focus on the citations that need a closer look before filing.

How to use: In the CiteLaw Documents tab, select a document from your connected Smokeball matter and choose Verify Citations from the CiteLaw Action menu. Review the results using the All, Matches, Possible, and No Match filters before filing.

Issue Spotter - Share Your Story

Story Mode lets you or a client describe the legal situation in everyday language and receive guidance grounded in real case law. For attorneys, it's a fast way to triage a new matter or generate an initial issue spotter from intake notes. For consumers, it's an authoritative first look at the law before scheduling a consultation.

How to use: From the CiteLaw home screen, select Share Your Story and describe the situation in plain language. CiteLaw returns a structured analysis with applicable rules, cited authority, and recommended next steps, including the option to be matched with an attorney through Trails.

Claude Connector

CiteLaw's MCP connector ties Claude directly into the CiteLaw database. Attorneys can run research questions, verify citations, and pull case analysis from inside any Claude conversation, with every claim grounded in cited authority readable inside Claude.

How to use: Install the CiteLaw connector from the Claude marketplace and sign in with your CiteLaw account. Ask a research question in Claude in plain language — for example, "What is the standard for summary judgment in Delaware?" — and Claude will return the structured CiteLaw answer with linked authority.

Setting Up the Smokeball Integration

Before you begin

You will need an active CiteLaw account and your Smokeball login credentials. The integration syncs documents from any matter you have access to in Smokeball.

1. Open the Documents tab in CiteLaw

Sign in to CiteLaw.org. From the left sidebar, click the Documents icon. In the Document Sources panel on the right, locate the Smokeball card and click Connect.

2. Authorize Smokeball

A Smokeball sign-in window will open. Enter your Smokeball credentials and approve the connection. You will be returned to CiteLaw with the Smokeball card marked as connected.

3. Browse your matter files

Your Smokeball matters and the documents associated with them will now appear inside the Documents tab. You can use the search bar at the top of the Documents panel to filter by matter name, client, or document title.

4. Run a CiteLaw Action on any document

Select a document from any matter and click CiteLaw Action in the right-hand panel. Choose one of the following analyses:

Verify Citations — checks every citation against the CiteLaw database.
Devil's Advocate — anticipates counter-arguments and surfaces weaknesses.
Deep Research — runs an exhaustive authority search on the issues in the document.
Contract Review — clause-by-clause analysis.
Key Terms Extractor — pulls out obligations, dates, and defined terms.
Opposing Brief Breakdown — dissects an opposing party's brief argument by argument.

5. Set jurisdiction and run the analysis

Select the relevant state and court from the jurisdiction dropdowns and click the action button (for example, "Challenge My Arguments" for Devil's Advocate). The analysis will run in CiteLaw and the results will appear in the Research panel.

6. Export the result back to Smokeball

Click Export at the top of the analysis. In the Export Answer dialog, select the sections you want to include, name the file, and click Save to Smokeball. The result will be saved as a Word document (.docx) attached to the original matter in Smokeball.

Tips

Run Verify Citations on any brief before filing. The integration catches typos in volume numbers, reversed case names, and citations that don't exist in the database.
Devil's Advocate works best when you upload your strongest draft. The model is most useful when it has substantive arguments to attack.
Exported files are saved alongside other matter documents in Smokeball. They are not synced back if edited in Smokeball, so treat each export as a snapshot.
